چکیده

Data on the location and dimensions of the pivotal surfaces in inverse hexagonal (H(II)) and inverse cubic (Q(II)) phases of phospholipids and glycolipids are reviewed. This includes the H(II) phases of dioleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine, 2:1 mol/mol mixtures of saturated fatty acids with the corresponding diacyl phosphatidylcholine, and glucosyl didodecylglycerol, and also the Q(II)(230/G) gyroid inverse cubic phases of monooleoylglycerol and glucosyl didodecylglycerol. Data from the inverse cubic phases are largely compatible with those from inverse hexagonal H(II)-phases. The pivotal plane is located in the hydrophobic region, relatively close to the polar-apolar interface. The area per lipid at the pivotal plane is similar in size to lipid cross-sectional areas found in the fluid lamellar phase (L(α)) of lipid bilayers.

An NMR study of translational diffusion and structural anisotropy in magnetically alignable nonionic surfactant mesophases.

The diffusion of both water and surfactant components in aqueous solutions of the nonionic surfactant "C12E6"--which includes hexagonal, cubic, lamellar, and micellar mesophases--has been studied by pulsed-field-gradient NMR. Diffusion coefficients were measured in unaligned samples in all of these phases. They were also obtained in the hexagonal and lamellar phases in oriented monodomain sampl...

Differential effects of the hydrophobic surfactant proteins on the formation of inverse bicontinuous cubic phases.

Prior studies have shown that the biological mixture of the two hydrophobic surfactant proteins, SP-B and SP-C, produces faster adsorption of the surfactant lipids to an air/water interface, and that they induce 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl phosphatidylethanolamine (POPE) to form inverse bicontinuous cubic phases. Previous studies have shown that SP-B has a much greater effect than SP-C on adsorption. ...

Diffraction techniques for nonlamellar phases of phospholipids.

A neutron diffraction method applicable to nonlamellar phases of substrate-supported lipid membranes is described and validated. When prepared on a flat substrate, the resulting nonlamellar phases have layered symmetry which provides some advantages over powder diffraction for detailed structure determination. This approach recently led to the detection of a rhombohedral phase and a distorted h...

Theoretical characterization of the high-pressure phases of PbF2

Ab initio perturbed ion calculations were performed for the cubic, orthorhombic, hexagonal, and monoclinic phases of PbF2. A complete characterization of these phases was achieved in terms of the potential energy surfaces, the equations of state, and the phase-transition pressures. Thermal effects were included via a quasiharmonic nonempirical Debye model. The internal parameters of the unit ce...

X-ray studies on the interaction of the antimicrobial peptide gramicidin S with microbial lipid extracts: evidence for cubic phase formation.

We have investigated the effect of the interaction of the antimicrobial peptide gramicidin S (GS) on the thermotropic phase behavior of model lipid bilayer membranes generated from the total membrane lipids of Acholeplasma laidlawii B and Escherichia coli. The A. laidlawii B membrane lipids consist primarily of neutral glycolipids and anionic phospholipids, while the E. coli inner membrane lipi...
